Messiah Banner

Even after 100 consecutive performances, the magic of singing Handel’s Messiah continues to excite Auckland Choral.

There are roughly a quarter of a million notes in Messiah and Handel wrote them in 24 days. From the moment of the opening overture followed by the consoling ‘Comfort Ye my People’ the spine tingles with the sense that something special is about to unfold.

Handel confidently announces the birth of Christ with the radiant chorus ‘For unto us a Child is Born’. Then there’s one of the most famous pieces of choral music, the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’. When King George II first heard the ‘Hallelujah’, he leapt to his feet in excitement, which started quite a tradition. Join us to experience the freshness, inspiration and joy of a truly timeless classic full of the most uplifting music ever written.

Let the spirit of Christmas begin…

Who we are: Get to know some of our choir members

  • Lisa Er

Picture of Lisa ErLisa has been in the choir since 1974 with the exception of a couple of years when she was busy with small children.
Born in the UK Lisa emigrated with her parents to New Zealand at the age of 16. Already politically active Lisa has continued to have a passionate interest in peace, politics, ethics and philosophy, as well as a deep love of music.
A primary school teacher for 14 years, Lisa then created the business Lisa's Hummus, which she sold a few years ago. Now Lisa is immersed in creating political solutions via The Awareness Party, and  will continue singing in the choir as long as she is able!

  • Anna Bassett

    Picture of Anna Bassett

Hi, I’m Anna, and I am originally from the UK but have called New Zealand home for over 20 years. I sang in choirs in the UK in a past life but had a long sabbatical owing to a transient career in the yachting industry, sailing far and wide. I joined Auckland Choral in 2011 when work brought me closer to home, and became a member of the Management and Marketing committees. I sing sop 1, and I am thrilled to be singing again, particularly as part of such an inspiring, fun and talented choir.

More recently I got a degree in Sport Management at Unitec, and I freelance between sport events, the marine industry and a Youth Leadership programme at Unitec. For kicks, I love to tramp, ski, swim, climb, sail, paddle – and generally go for really long walks in the beautiful New Zealand “outback”.
