Thinking about joining Auckland Choral?

We welcome you to come and experience singing with Auckland Choral. A great starting point is to join us at one of our open rehearsals. This will give you feel of ‘what we are about’, meet us and enjoy singing with us at a rehearsal.

Hopefully you will be inspired to audition! Whilst the audition process  can seem a little scary, we make it supportive and ‘painless’! The audition process is an important aspect of ensuring we maintain the high choral standards for which we are known. Below maps out the process for joining Auckland Choral. Give it a go – you’ll see that we are a group of diverse people, with a shared passion of choral singing. We’re a friendly community. Singing is fun, uplifting, inspiring… tonic for the soul. At Auckland Choral you will also enjoy with a healthy dose of musical challenge… and you’ll make some wonderful new friendships too!

Auditioning for Auckland Choral

If you would like to audition for Auckland Choral, the following is the process involved:

  1. You will be invited to attend a couple of rehearsals and sing with the choir. This will enable you to find out if the choir’s repertoire and method of working are right for you.
  2. If you are then keen to audition, you will be given a preliminary “voice check” to gauge your current level of vocal ability and suitability for the choir, and to confirm where your voice sits best in the choir.
  3. You might be invited to sing in the next concert if you are able to fulfill the minimum attendance requirements for rehearsals.
  4. Following your first performance with the choir, you will be given a full audition. This will involve singing a prepared piece, some aural tests (singing back played notes, pitching notes in chords, and clapping rhythms), and sight reading.

On passing the full audition, your membership will be confirmed.

  • Sandy Bulmer

Picture of Sandy BulmerLike so many contraltos, I first got put in the alto section as a school girl because I could read music and manage to sing a line of harmony. I joined Auckland Choral when I was in high school and now I’ve been a member for 40 years! I started singing with my mum as a toddler, sitting on her knee while she played the piano and sang soprano and tenor Messiah arias. I used to come to Auckland Choral’s Saturday dress rehearsals in the Town Hall and follow the score in my early teenage years, and it was a natural step to join Mum in the choir when I was 15. I remember Choral Hall in Airedale Street where we used to meet (before Mayoral Drive was built). It was a dusty old building and freezing in winter, but the ladies in the alto section were very kind to me and welcomed me into the back row. Nothing really changes in that respect; the Auckland Choral altos today are a great bunch of people as well!

  • Olive Leddy

Picture of Olive LeddyI have sung ever since I can remember, joining choirs through school and university, and in the course of teaching, took up conducting choirs. Around this time I re-discovered the personal joy of singing in a choir and have sung with Auckland Choral for over ten years now. As Chair of the Auckland Committee of the New Zealand Choral Federation, I am doing all I can to strengthen the choral community in our city, supporting  many choirs in primary, intermediate and secondary schools as well as our adult choirs. I have many other areas of interest, enjoy travelling with my husband and connecting with our three children. Music is an integral part of my life that I believe benefits in a multitude of ways those who participate in it. Everyone needs to find places of personal well-being and coming to Auckland Choral’s practices each week, is one of mine.
